When DeSoto and Coppell stepped onto the field on November 23 in the in Conference 5A D1 area finals, DeSoto, ranking 4th in the nation and 2nd in Texas, expected its star studded offense, which averaged 55 points per game thus far, to put up another huge game.
Coppell, 21st in the DigitalSports National Football Rankings and 4th in Texas, had other plans. The Cowboys did everything they could to keep DeSoto’s offense off the including fake punts, onside kicks, and converting on fourth down.
After a hard fought game, Coppell’s strategy almost worked out, but in the end, DeSoto’s offense proved to be too good.
Coppell took an early 9-0 lead in the first quarter, but DeSoto responded with a 20-point second quarter to take a 20-16 half time lead.
In the third, the Cowboys got back in control scoring a touchdown and holding the Eagles to only five offensive plays.
Both teams scored a touchdown early in the fourth. Coppell got the ball leading 30-26 and did everything they could to keep DeSoto off the ball.
The Eagles got the ball back after stopping a fourth-and-2 around midfield with about four minutes left. DeSoto drove down the field and with under a minute left, Desmon White found Kevin Thomas in the endzone for a 19-yard score to win 34-30.
White finished having completed 11 of 18 passes for 160 yards and three touchdowns. The quarterback also rushed the ball 16 times for 136 yards and a score. Jamal Johnson caught two of White’s touchdowns, ending with three catches for 84 yards.
DeSoto now moves on to the Regional Finals, where they will face Martin High School on November 29.
